Srinagar, Feb 20 (KNO): Authorities on Friday cracked down on unlabelled honey in HMT Srinagar, seizing 725 kg of the product that lacked essential details such as expiry dates and manufacturer information, officials said. The Drugs and Food Control Organization (DFCO) warned that selling unlabelled food is illegal and poses serious health risks, signaling zero tolerance for unsafe food in Kashmir markets. In a statement to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a DFCO spokesperson said that acting on specific intelligence, the Food Safety Enforcement Drug and Food Control Organization carried out a targeted inspection in Abanshah Area HMT and seized approximately 725 kilograms of honey stored without statutory labeling. The spokesperson said that the stock lacked all mandatory details, including: product name, net quantity, date of packing/manufacturing, best before/expiry date, name and address of the manufacturer/packer, FSSAI license number, and storage instructions (where applicable). “Samples were collected for analytical purposes.” He further issued a strict warning to food business operators, saying unlabelled food products are illegal and pose serious health risks. “Consumers should report any suspicious or unlabelled food items immediately by calling 104 (Food Safety Helpline). Packaged food must carry complete details of the manufacturer, date of packing and use-by date. This seizure underscores DFCO’s zero-tolerance policy toward unsafe and non-compliant food circulating in Kashmir’s markets,” the spokesperson said.—(KNO)
